Internal documents for PS4 NEO leaked

Phil Spencer anticipated at E3 2016 a new business model for consoles based on new compatible configurations instead of generations. That was the official movement, the underground one was the PS4 NEO leak before the official confirmation by Sony.

The internal documents that described NEO and drew the guidelines for developers have been leaked. There is not new information in these documents, but it’s a great way to confirm the info previously leaked.

  • John Isaac

but will it play cd’s LOL

  • Sean Don

Sounds like the scorpio will be more powerful

    • FamiGami

No it doesn’t. Scorpio is doing the same damn thing.

      • cwatz

Scorpio is significantly more powerful than the NEO. Significantly.

        • Descmond Bell

They still need support. If Microsoft can get more 1st party titles, it may stand a chance. If not, Nothing will change for them.

          • cwatz

That’s another topic/story. Their abysmal announce killed a decade of brand building in an instant. But ya, was just talking about the raw power in response to fami.

          • wastheman

same shitty microsoft, same shitty console

          • Blake Boschetti

            All consoles are shitty, m8

          • Tachyonic Cargo

I don’t know what version of reality you are sitting in, but their announcement was spot on the money. It did EXACTLY what it was supposed to do. Make everyone second guess any thought of purchasing Neo.

On the one hand you have the Xbox One S, which does pretty much exactly what Neo does – upscale games to 4K . . . for less money. Neo will cost more than the $300 to get an Xbox One S – possibly $100 to $150 more . . . just to get your PS4 games upscaled to 4K. And worse still , Neo cannot even do HDR. Nor does Neo have a 4K blu-ray player under the hood. So for gamers looking for a quick and inexpensive 4K fix, Microsoft announced a product that stomps all over Neo. And cost less than a regular PS4 at the same time.

Then on the other hand, for gamers who have to have the best where a higher price tag is not an issue; who have to have the most powerful console on the market; who have to have games in NATIVE 4K resolution; who have to have a true VR experience by hooking directly into Oculus Rift, or HTC Vive (considered the two gold standards of VR that all other VR experiences are judged by); the gamer who has to have all the things that PS4 Neo cannot do, then you wait a year and pick up Xbox Scorpio.

What Microsoft so elegantly have done with their “abysmal” announcement, was box in Sony on both ends of the consumer spectrum, and given gamers of every demographic, and every budget level, a whole lot of very good reason not to purchase any version of PlayStation 4 for the rest of this generation.

Now if that is your version of “abysmal”, then you are either a died in the wool Playstation fan (nothing wrong with that, I used to be one of those myself), or you are from the Bizarro universe.

          • bruce livingston

No it didn’t, lol. My friends and I are all still buying Neo. I don’t know anyone who second guessed buying a Neo. I may have bought a Scorpio as well, but I have a gaming PC, so not necessary now.

          • James

Fanboy replies with novel nobody reads.

          • Tachyonic Cargo

Well for starters, Microsoft already HAS more 1st party games than Sony.

I know, I know. As a long time Playstation owner, traditionally (see PS2 and especially PS3) Sony has had more 1st party titles than Microsoft. But this generation, especially with so much of Sony’s attention turned toward doing VR themselves, the end result has been fewer 1st party games for PS4 than for any Playstation console in history.

Meanwhile, under new boss Phil Spencer, (according to a report in the Wall Street Journal) Microsoft has set aside a $1 billion war chest expressly for the purpose of developing 1st party games. To put that war chest into perspective, last gen (gen 7), the estimated combined expenditure for 1st party game development for all three platform holders (Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft), was less than $600 million.

The end result of these policy shifts at both companies, is this gen Microsoft has more 1st party games than Sony – and delivers them to market years faster than Sony. This years Sony E3 press conference was amazeballs.

But with the exception of Horizon: Zero Dawn, and The Last Guardian (which took seven years itself to develop) none of the 1st party games Sony showed off, will even be out before 2018/2019. Most of those games had JUST started development. It only looks like Sony has more 1st party games, because they showed them all in one place at one tie. But in actuality, the release of those games are spread out years, and years of space. By comparison, the games that Microsoft showed off at E3, all of them will be hitting store shelves within 18 months, or less – most of them were scheduled to ship BEFORE E3 next year.

Anyway, just thought that a bit of clarification was necessary.

          • bruce livingston

None of the games will be out for 2018? Surely you have proof of this? Surely you wouldn’t be just making up fanboy nonsense?

          • Descmond Bell

Sony has always had more 1st Party and Large 1st party games. So you are not correct in saying that Microsoft has more than Sony.

          • Tek PhaN

Yeah Xbox has been hurting in the games department this gen.

        • Amocoru

Why would anyone buy the Scorpio now that all Xbox One games will be available on PC and Xbone? I’m glad they allowed it because I was never going to buy an Xbox anyway, but they killed their own product in the same discussion.

      • Tek PhaN

Yeah neither of them have enough power to run native 4K games @ high performance.

        • dontcare

Neither do 3 thousand dollar PCs native 4K isnt quite here yet. Not smooth anyway

          • Nate1337

I don’t know man, my single GeForce GTX 1080 can handle native 4k 60fps at the medium/high or high settings that the PS4 runs @ 1080p60. Two of my graphics cards can do 4k60 Ultra without breaking a sweat.

          • Tek PhaN

            exactly

        • Brent

          YES THEY CAN

      • Sean Don

Yeah compare the hardware. Less powerful by 2 teraflops

        • FamiGami

Lol, do you even know what a teraflop is? It’s meaningless. It isn’t a measure of power capability at all! Scorpio is the same as neo. Get over it.

          • Sean Don

Lol ok. This is a direct selling point of graphics cards and a measure of speed but its meaningless.

          • FamiGami

Every tech reporter ridiculed the use of the term because of its meaning. A teraflop is a trillion floating point operations per second. It is a measure of SPEED not processing power. A faster processor is not a more powerful processor.

          • Sean Don

Please elaborate on the difference between speed and power in the context of graphics cards…. oh boy this should be good. Have you even seen a side by side on the specs?

          • FamiGami

Teraflops dictate the speed at which information is sent and received (transfer rate) whereas gigahertz dictate the speed at which information is processed (capability). A higher transfer rate doesn’t determine how powerful a machine is, it determines how quickly it can get information to your screen. A higher processing capability directly determines the machines ability to generate higher resolution imagery and therefore, is directly linked to powerful a machine is to consumers. That said, being able to generate higher resolutions serves no good if the machine takes too long to display that resolution. Likewise, displaying a lower resolution quickly only allows users to see subpar imagery with less latency. So if you want a trillion teraflops go ahead, you’ll get higher frame rate but you will not get higher resolution.

          • Sean Don

They’re both going for 4k. Its not about resolution. What are you even talking about? Whatever you’re driveling on about, you know speed and power are pretty much synonymous in the context of talking about abilities. Have fun sony boy. I own neither. I have a gaming pc so eat a d!kk lol. I will be buying the most powerful console when it comes out and its not the neo lol

          • FamiGami

They are not synonymous and to think it is reveals far more about your ignorance and immaturity than it does anything else. Considering that I own neither machine and use PC exclusively I have to wonder how shot of a pic you have since you clearly know nothing about them. It is because they’re going for 4K that teraflops is absolutely meaningless. GHz are far more relevant in this case.

          • Sean Don

Is neo better now or something? Did you prove me wrong that the neo is more powerful yet?

          • FamiGami

There are no stats out to say Scorpio is more powerful. Thus far, they are the same. Come back when you get a computer literacy education.

          • Sean Don

Ok Mr. Confirmation Bias. The scorpio specs were released way before this.

          • FamiGami

Then prove it, you immature fool.

          • Sean Don

google it, you noob at life. Many publications have already done a side by side comparison

          • FamiGami

You ask me for an explanation you could easily Google and I gave you the courtesy of explaining it to you. There is nothing to google because there is nothing announced. If you claim otherwise, PROVE IT.

          • Sean Don

It was revealed at E3 you fukken idiot lol

          • FamiGami

Revealed? Announcing a name is not the same as announcing its stats you ignorant baby. You’ve been proven wrong, you’ve been proven ignorant and you’ve been proven to lack any evidence supporting your claims. You going to keep crying or do you need me to wipe your ass after spewing all that shit?

          • Sean Don

You are the one that cannot find publicly available info and acting like that is a valid position and I am the baby? Ok kid. Good talk lol

          • FamiGami

How dumb are you? lol at the article above, you ignorant baby. Shall I call your mommy to fix your boo boo?

          • Sean Don

You’re the one crying at the realization that microsoft will have the most powerful console a year after neo drops. lol

          • FamiGami

Which according to you is as powerful as an ignorant shit with no evidence to support his claims. Poor baby.

          • Sean Don

Why would I need evidence? If you took 2 seconds to google : neo vs scorpio, you would see for yourself. And for that you remain Mr. Confirmation Bias.

          • FamiGami

You would go a long way to convincing people if you provided evidence. Until YOU can prove it, YOU remain a fanboy baby.

          • Sean Don

Lol and you remain 12 years old. Thats like telling me to prove the specs of any device that have already been REVEALED. Press conference and all. Several articles have been written about it. You are the fan boy with blinders on. Its ok. You stay in your little bubble world and sing ‘sony is the best’ to your self at night

          • FamiGami

Scorpio was not revealed, it was announced. No specs for it have ever been released. If you claim they have, prove it.

          • Sean Don

answer this, where did that teraflop number come from if no hardware was announced?

          • FamiGami

You idiot, what part of a teraflop do you not understand is meaningless and NOT a measure of power? Again, I ask you to prove the specs that make Scorpio more powerful.

          • Sean Don

Watching you make a fool of yourself when a google search would help you is more entertaining lol

          • FamiGami

Except there’s nothing to google as proven by your lack of evidence.

          • Sean Don

How much does it keep you up at night to know the neo will not be the most powerful console?

          • FamiGami

I never said it was the most powerful. I said they were the same. It must hurt being such a fan boy. Have you found any proof yet or are you going to keep making things up?

          • Sean Don

You are the only one on the planet that thinks they will be equal power. What is that like to be so blind to the truth?

          • FamiGami

Your lack of evidence is absolutely blinding!

          • Sean Don

The burden of proof lies on the one that challenges what everyone already knows

          • FamiGami

EXACTLY. Everyone knows no specs for Scorpio have been revealed so you are challenging what everyone knows. The burden of proof is on you. Where’s the proof?

          • Sean Don

Listen here you idiot. You think tflops is a useless measure so I have nothing else to say to you. Tflops and bandwidth are all that matters.

          • FamiGami

Lmao. Still no proof? Speed is not power. Delivering the same graphics faster only increases frame rate, not graphics.

          • Sean Don

And you have no proof in that statement. Go looks at the neo specs in this very article. What do they list after cpu? Oh whats that? flops and bandwidth?

          • FamiGami

            Where your proof bro?

          • Sean Don
          • Sean Don

I tried to post a link but it wouldn’t let me. Just says pending. Oh well. I guess you will have you use google to find out the Xbox one S is the competitor to the neo and the scorpio coming out next year will be the most powerful.

          • vgleakscom

We don’t allow this kind of language.

Please, behave or we will delete messages.

            Thanks in advance.

          • Sean Don

Considering he called me an idiot first, you can fuck off too

    • My name is Shayan

The Scorpio will be significantly more powerful than the Neo, but ti will act as a successor to the Xbox One most likely. It will also be released much later than the Neo meaning it is not an iterative bump in the current gen console world, but an entirely new direction that Microsoft will be heading in for the 9th generation consoles

      • Tachyonic Cargo

Sorry son, Scorpio is not 9th gen. It’s very much 8th gen. Microsoft’s own literature keeps calling it part of the Xbox One family of consoles. And furthermore, go to the lengths of making it both forward/backward compatible with existing Xbox One software.

It’s 8th gen. Neither company haven’t even begun to talk about 9th gen yet.

        • My name is Shayan

Well that’s a bummer. I think that it will definitely fragment the community. If they’re aiming for native 4k gaming on the scorpio like they’ve been saying, then developers have to develop for a 4k game, and a sub 1080p game? That makes no sense and sounds like a hassle.

          • bruce livingston

Your concerns are shared by many. Also, Scorpio won’t be able to handle 4k gaming, at least not on anything more than low settings.

          • Tachyonic Cargo

Developers already do that right now on the PC.

Some PC gamers have the necessary hardware that can push 4K gaming.

However, the vast majority of PC gamers have rigs about as powerful as Xbox One and PS4 (this according to Steam’s own research and reports). Yet PC game developers are able to develop a single code base that can be adjusted on the fly, to match whatever hardware level the PC gamer is playing at. And you have to consider that on PC, you literally have thousands of potential hardware configurations for developers to have to work around. Yet, developers make it work every day of the week.

On Xbox One/Scorpio, there are ONLY two hardware configs. Either you have the hardware of the Xbox One, or you have the hardware of the Scorpio. For game developers who have been doing this for decades on the PC, Xbox One/Scorpio does not present even the slightest hiccup.

Just like on PC, they will write the game to adjust to whichever hardware is present. But unlike on PC, because their are only two hardware configs, and both of those are known to the developer, they can optimize their code specifically for both.

In other words, any concerns about this splitting the Xbox market, or being a hassle for developers, are stemming largely from people who are either detractors of the idea, or who have zero familiarity to how games are already developed.

      • Tek PhaN

6TF’s isn’t a next gen jump in performance….more like a mid gen jump.

        • My name is Shayan

Well the Scorpio is supposed to do 4k native so. . . Hopefully it’s not 4k at low settings

          • Tek PhaN

6TF’s isn’t enough horsepower to run 4K native with high performance/quality with modern games. Not even 9TF’s card on the PC can run all modern games native 4K/60+FPS Like Witcher 3 for example. Maybe(hopefully the 1080ti/Titan Pascal) will be the 1st single GPU to achieve this.

      • Sean Don

No its the same concept as the neo, just more powerful. And yes it releases a year later but so what.

    • Tek PhaN

More costly, releasing later and Scorpio still has the problem XBONE has….no AAA rated/selling exclusives. Neo and the NX will put a hurting on the Scorpio in sales and exclusives. Scorpio should be called Last Box dOne as this will be the last MS made Xbox console.

      • Sean Don

Ok Super fan boy. That scorpio is almost twice the power

        • yahoo

Bro- trying to convince everyone that your opinion should be theirs is always a lost battle. Enjoy your Xbox One.. People here will enjoy their PS4s.. It’s OK, differing opinions are a thing.

          • Sean Don

My original statement was the scorpio will be more powerful and as of right now that is an indisputable fact when comparing the specs. Thank you, have a nice day.

        • Tek PhaN

          4.2 x 2=6 eh? lol

          • Sean Don

Whatever. You still mad scorpio will be that deal lol

  • Jim Bob

can i connect my phone to it

  • TheRandomOne

So any games before October this year wont play on the Neo ?

    • Jerid Elzinga

Read it again. It’s telling developers that any titles made after that date need to be compatible with both, not one or the other

    • Jerid Elzinga

There is no word on “backwards compatibility” because there won’t be any NEO-exclusive games. If you pop in a PS4 game into a NEO, you get slightly better graphics and a more stable framerate. That’s about it

    • My name is Shayan

They should be playable, but you won’t see a great change in graphics unless the game is Neo ready. Game patches may release later on for older games to run at higher resolutions/frame rates on the Neo

    • bruce livingston

All current PS4 games will play on Neo.

      • TheRandomOne

That is not what it is said in the documents look under What is Neo

        • Chase

          You read it wrong.

It’s saying there is going to be a Neo version and a regular PS4 version for every game after October.

  • wastheman

    so it will be $400?

  • Jay117

    So basically, Nothing interesting.

  • Abobo

But does it have Clayfighter 63 1/3?

    Check mate. N64 wins again.

  • Fidei Defensor

I just wish the Playstation had support for usb connected hard drives. Specifically, being able to play games off external hard drives.

  • Josh

For fuck’s sake, Sony, just publish your PS exclusives on Steam and be done with it. This is just…sad.

    • dontcare

Why, because the games you want to play arent on steam? You cna buy a console for half the price of an iphone, I think you’ll be alright.

      • Josh

I’m sure I’d be alright, but I don’t *want* another bloody console. I’d rather play Sony exclusives on my vastly superior gaming PC, rather than the low-midrange PC that is the PS4.

I’m glad I’m not an investor in Sony, honestly. They don’t seem to like money very much.

  • Nate1337

    Can it play Crysis?

But seriously, I’ll just avoid both it and Scorpio. What a waste- more cash-grab tactics from Sony and MS. I’ll wait till the 9th gen to pick up a new console.
