2024 is moving along at a rapid pace, which means plenty of us are already keen to see what’s going to be the next big online summer hit. Maybe there’s some big news waiting for us ahead of the Christmas season — it’s never too early to start speculating!

As always, we’re here to break down some of the biggest rumors and leaks doing the rounds in the games industry — and here’s a quick rundown of some of the more exciting developments on the horizon:

2K could snap up FIFA license

The end of an era? The FIFA name has been inextricably linked to EA for more than two decades but that changed with the last iteration in 2023 with the development company and football’s governing body parting ways – hence the game’s subtle rebrand to EA FC 24. Now, latest rumors suggest that a new company could take up the mantle, such as 2K.

Mike Straw, commenting for Insider-Gaming.com, broke the news in February via X (formerly Twitter). Could this mean FIFA 25 is being worked on by someone else? Fans of the franchise are certainly hungry for new features and improved gameplay so keep those eyes peeled…

A new Bond is still on the horizon

Goldeneye 007 is, of course, still one of the best-loved FPS games of all time. It helped to bring FPS multiplayer into the mainstream — and in the decades since its release, there have been lots of games and studios trying to catch that fire again.

None have ever really reached Goldeneye’s iconic status level, however that hasn’t stopped Bond games from creeping out of the woodwork over the years. Take the so-called Project 007, a forthcoming game from IO Interactive.

So far, all we have to hand is a teaser trailer — and the talk that 007 will be heading back to consoles this year. Things are still very guarded when it comes to gameplay, too. Will it be an FPS or a stealth title? Who’s to say — but while we don’t have an exact release date or even much information at all on Project 007 just yet, we could be in a much clearer position after July.

At least FPS fans should have a new Doom title on the horizon — we’ll keep you posted.

Nintendo news galore

Nintendo fans still have at least one more raft of releases to look forward to in 2024, but things seem to be slowing down a little — which only adds fuel to the rumors that the Switch 2 really isn’t far away.

Nintendo recently announced news regarding their next home console will emerge by the end of the fiscal year, which means we will probably know more by spring 2025.

However, leakers appear to be fueling things further by suggesting project names for upcoming games. It’s suggested that further sequels in Nintendo’s landmark Mario and Zelda series are in the works, though whether we will see them by the end of 2024 is anyone’s guess.

In the meantime, fans of cult Nintendo racing franchise F-Zero, which finally saw a new title in the franchise launch last year in the shape of F-Zero 99, seem to be getting excited about a potential remaster of F-Zero GX, a Gamecube title that first released two decades ago.

Could Nintendo answer F-Zero fans’ prayers after all these years? We’ll have to wait and see.

What about online casino gaming?

Alongside video and PC gaming, there are also a few trends bubbling away in online casino and slots gaming that are worth watching out for in the months to come.

In particular, crash gambling games are continuing to pick up interest across the country thanks to the rise of one or two big titles since 2020. Games like Aviator, FlyX, and Spaceman all rely on players deciding when to ‘quit’ at the best time.

While there’s growing interest in AR and VR gaming at casinos and slot sites, technology still has some way to catch up — and simple crash games are piling up in casino catalogs at a blistering pace.

Could we be seeing the next revolution in online casino gaming? From the bingo boom of the early 00s to the mobile revolution a few years ago, we’re probably well overdue another major shift.
