Wii U is selling a little bit slower than Nintendo expected. There are a lot of reasons for that but one is primordial: Wii U needs more games, exclusive ones. I can play multiplatforms on PS3, Xbox 360 or PC, I don’t need to buy a new machine for that. If you haven’t got a past-gen console and you came from Wii, the story is different.
Games are not selling enough on Wii U, UK sales are a disaster and in other markets the numbers are poor too, really depressive for Nintendo. Calvin Hall has obtained feedback about Wii U on D.I.C.E, the event for developers and insiders of this industry. An Activision employee told him this:
Activision didn’t expect much from Wii U sales of Black Ops 2, but they sure didn’t expect it to be that abysmal. Activision gave Wii U owners the best version of Blops 2 with Off TV features, and Nintendo fans didn’t support it. It’s easy for Nintendo fans to trash publishers for not giving them ports, but publishers have wisened up. They realize Nintendo fans are all talk. Nintendo fans are vocal with their mouths, but when it’s time to open their wallets, they’ll spend that $60 on New Super Mario Bros instead.
When he asked this person about the opinion of others developers, he got this:
There’s just no enthusiasm for it. The only reason publishers are still going to bring games to Wii U is because they don’t want to damage their relationship with Nintendo.
Therefore, thirds are disappointed with Wii U, but they don’t cancel their games because they want to keep their relationships with Nintendo. It’s a strange time for new products, if you don’t call Apple; sells aren’t going to be easy.
