The headline probably doesn’t surprise anyone, even though Sony officially ended its relationship with the PlayStation Vita some time ago. Apparently, the success of the PlayStation Portal and the huge popularity of the Nintendo Switch have pushed them back into this market.
According to Bloomberg, Sony is reportedly working on a portable system capable of running PS5 games, a project said to be in its early stages. This means we are likely years away from its launch, with Microsoft also working on their own portable Xbox, as they have confirmed, and a new Switch 2 expected to follow in its predecessor’s footsteps.
The success of the PlayStation Portal seems to have motivated Sony to develop a device capable of running PS5 titles natively. Portal was initially conceived as a machine with standalone capabilities but eventually became a remote-use device and now a streaming device for PS5 games (without needing a PS5 console).
While this project may never make it to market, it would be interesting if Sony aims to run PS5 products on it or perhaps even looks towards the next generation.
Thanks, Bloomberg.
