Somewhere between Forza Horizon 6 dropping in May and GTA VI arriving in November, 2026 turned into the year gaming Twitter forgot how to be cynical. For Australians who split their evenings between pokies at All Spins Win Casino and whatever’s in their console backlog, the calendar has already delivered, and there’s still more to come. Bond returned, Logan finally got his game, and GTA VI closes the year in November. Fable slipped to February 2027, but that’s a story for another time. Not a bad run.
What’s Out and What’s Still Coming
The year opened with a racing game and a spy thriller. Marvel’s Wolverine hit PS5 this month. Fable and GTA VI close out the year. Here’s the full picture.

Forza Horizon 6: Japan Was the Obvious Next Stop
Every few years, the Forza Horizon series picks a country, builds an open world around it, and makes car people very happy. Previous entries covered Australia, Britain, Mexico and more. Japan, with its mountain passes, city circuits and decades of car culture mythology, was always the logical destination.
Forza Horizon 6 launched on 19 May on Xbox Series X/S and PC, with a PS5 release still to follow. The map is the largest Playground Games has built: Tokyo’s distinct districts alone cover five times the surface area of previous festival zones, with more than 550 cars at launch. Players start as a tourist who must qualify for the Horizon Festival instead of arriving as an established driver. The Touge race type runs up mountain sections, which is as close to Initial D territory as a mainstream title has come. The engine sounds were reworked for launch. Progress.
007 First Light: Bond Is Back, and IO Interactive Gets It
James Bond hadn’t had a proper video game since 2012. IO Interactive, the studio behind the Hitman: World of Assassination trilogy, seemed an unusual choice. In hindsight, it made complete sense: the Hitman formula runs on infiltration, disguises, gadgets and improvisation. That’s basically a Bond mission brief.
007 First Light launched on 27 May across PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC. It’s an origin story following Naval recruit James Bond, played by Patrick Gibson, through his early days as a Double 0 agent. Lennie James plays his reluctant mentor Greenway; Priyanga Burford is M. Players can approach missions as a ghost, gadget through a gala in Kensington, or go loud in a car chase through mountain roads.
Reviews placed it in the 98th percentile on OpenCritic, with IGN giving it a 9/10 and most outlets landing between 8 and 9.5. The consensus: IO transferred the Hitman formula to Bond better than most expected, and the 14-year wait turned out to be worth it.
A few things that set it apart:
● First Bond game in 14 years, since Activision’s 007 Legends in 2012;
● Patrick Gibson voices an original take on Bond, not tied to any film version;
● Available on Xbox Game Pass at launch.
Marvel’s Wolverine: Insomniac Takes on Logan
Announced at The Game Awards 2021 with a brief cinematic and very little else, Marvel’s Wolverine spent five years being anticipated, leaked and delayed. It launched on 15 September, PS5 exclusive, from Insomniac Games.
The tone is deliberately different from Spider-Man. Wolverine is M-rated, violent and focused on Logan searching for answers about his past, with Sabretooth, Mystique and Omega Red along the way. Locations span Madripoor, the Canadian wilderness and Tokyo.
Reviews landed with a Metacritic score around 77-78, making it Insomniac’s lowest-rated PS5 release to date, well below Spider-Man 2’s 90. The broad criticism: competent combat and good presentation, but a linear structure that feels dated beside the studio’s previous work. Sony placed the launch two months ahead of GTA VI, which at least gave the game some breathing room.
Key facts:
● Original story, not adapted from any comic arc or film;
● Set in the same universe as Insomniac’s Spider-Man titles;
● No PC release date confirmed; a port would likely arrive in 2027 at the earliest.
Fable: Moved to 2027
Playground Games announced a fall 2026 window at the Xbox Developer Direct in January, then pushed it back to February 2027 on 29 May. The official reason: a packed holiday calendar featuring GTA VI, Halo: Campaign Evolved and Gears of War: E-Day. Xbox wanted the game to have “a dedicated moment” rather than compete with half the industry at once. The morality system returns in revised form: NPC reactions shift based on player reputation, with different characters reading the same actions differently. It’s still coming to Xbox Series X/S, PS5 and PC, and will be on Game Pass at launch.
GTA VI: The One Everyone’s Been Waiting For
Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled for 19 November on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. The first trailer dropped in December 2023 and hit 268 million views. GTA V had sold over 220 million units by the time the date was locked.
The game returns to Vice City within the fictional state of Leonida, with two protagonists: Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick confirmed the date in May’s financial results, projecting net bookings of AU$8–8.2 billion for the following fiscal year. Multiple publishers shifted their own release dates specifically to avoid the surrounding window. That’s the kind of gravitational pull a game has once in a generation, if that.
FAQ
When does GTA VI come out?
19 November, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. Rockstar has held that date through a fair amount of online noise since the announcement, and Take-Two backed it up in their May earnings call. PC? Still waiting. No window given.
Is Marvel’s Wolverine on PC or Xbox?
PS5 only, at least for now. Insomniac put it out on 15 September and went quiet on ports. The Spider-Man games did eventually land on PC, so it’s probably coming at some point, 2027 at the earliest, with nothing confirmed either way.
Will Forza Horizon 6 reach PS5?
It should, later this year. Xbox said so when the game dropped on 19 May for Xbox Series X/S and PC, but a specific date hasn’t materialised since. Worth checking back closer to the end of the year.
Does Fable have a confirmed release date?
Yes. Fable was delayed from its original fall 2026 window on 29 May 2026 and is now set for February 2027. It covers Xbox Series X/S, PS5 and PC, with Game Pass access at launch.
