One of the groups most heavily affected by the latest Xbox layoffs—reportedly around 3,200 employees, although far from the only one—has been id Software. The legendary studio has allegedly seen its workforce reduced by 75%. A staggering cut that effectively relegates it to a support studio, given the scale of the layoffs.

As is often the case, id Software was working on several new games. According to reports, the studio had been experimenting with a new Perfect Dark, an original title inspired by the style of John Wick known internally as Fury, and a cooperative DOOM project.

A former developer has reportedly stated that id Software has been “razed to the foundations” and that it has now been “reduced to the size of a support studio.”

This is a studio that has consistently delivered quality titles while remaining at the forefront of technical innovation. Given what has happened, it is difficult to see where id Tech fits into the future, as well as the prospects for new entries in its major franchises—or at least projects developed entirely in-house.
