Nintendo achieved undeniable success with the original Switch. A hybrid system that combined handheld and home console gaming, allowing the company to unify its development efforts instead of splitting resources across multiple platforms at the same time. So far, that success appears to be continuing with Switch 2, which launched a year ago.

According to a Korean tech publication, Nintendo is working on an OLED model for Switch 2 that could arrive in 2028. This version would reportedly enter production no earlier than late 2027 and could hit store shelves sometime during 2028. That would place its release roughly three years after the launch of the original Switch 2 model. Honestly, that sounds fairly reasonable.

Samsung would be responsible for manufacturing the display and, unsurprisingly, this model would be more expensive than the current one due to the higher production costs associated with OLED panels. That’s before even taking into account the ongoing price increases affecting several components, which continue to push the cost of consumer technology higher and higher.

I’d also expect Nintendo to release a Switch 2 Lite model at some point, offering a handheld-only alternative for those who don’t need the hybrid functionality.
